Studying and practicing simply weren’t enough during my first two attempts at the PE Civil Structural exam. I knew the material — but under pressure, I realized that knowing what to study wasn’t the same as knowing how to think through each problem quickly and confidently.
I didn’t need more theory. I didn’t need more random practice questions. I needed a system — a clear decision path I could follow every time I saw a familiar problem type.
Inspired in part by the step-by-step clarity found in ASCE 7 Chapter 27 for common wind problems, I began organizing structural topics into repeatable procedures. Each “play” answers a simple question: Given this type of problem, what do I do next?
Every play follows a consistent structure: identify what the problem is asking, locate the governing reference, gather the essential inputs, apply the correct code equations, and interpret the results to confirm they satisfy design intent and code limits.
What started as a personal framework to assist in studying for the exam has grown into a practical resource for engineers at many stages of their careers — from focused exam preparation to early-career design work and long-term professional reference.
